 Second Exercise. Take a ball
of strong twine and, after having unrolled it entirely, entangle the whole in
every conceivable way, as conscientiously as you can.

For the first few days no more than a few minutes should be assigned to the
work.

It will be unwise to prolong the trial for more than five minutes at the start.

One has to reckon with the nervousness that must necessarily be produced and
that too long an application to the task will merely serve to develop.

The exercise will consist then of employing the five minutes in disentangling
the tangled mass of cord.

The next day, the interrupted work should be taken up anew, great care being
used not to break the twine. We have already said that it must be chosen for its
strength, but must not be too heavy.

At the end of a week one can prolong this exercise by several minutes.

After a fortnight, a quarter of an hour may be devoted to it. "We need hardly
again insist upon the point that the mass of twine must be entangled as
conscientiously as possible, and that if one is able to disentangle it before
the end of the time set apart for the task, one must, after having wound it into
a ball, unwind it and entangle it afresh.

Third Exercise. Put some coffee berries in a small bowl and count them over five
times running, to commence with, writing down the total the first time, so as
to be sure that you always find it the same.

After a few days the coffee may be replaced by grains of rice, which should be
counted in the same way.

In the case where a different total is arrived at, one must begin all over
again, entirely disregarding the previous counts.

At the least sign of impatience, stop and take two or three hundred paces at a
fairly quick walk, then go back to the work, which must be persisted in until
finished.

Fourth Exercise. This exercise, while it affords an excellent lesson in
perseverance, will be of great advantage to those who wish to cultivate a
musical instrument, because it will help them materially to acquire suppleness
of the fingers.

For other people it can not fail to be very useful, quite outside of the
application of which it affords an example, for in teaching them to move their
fingers independently of each other, it will tend to overcome the innate
awkwardness, and will tend to increase the natural ease of movement of the hand.

The exercise is begun by extending the hand on a flat surface, a table, for
instance, then one must endeavor to crook and to extend each finger-joint four
or five times, while taking the greatest care that this movement does not
involve a similar movement of the neighboring finger.

"When one has achieved this result, one can increase the numbe.1 of these
movements, that may be prolonged as high as ten or twenty times running.

This exercise must be performed without hurrying, and with as much regularity as
 possible.

Fifth Exercise. Place in front of you two glass bowls of the same capacity, one
filled with water and the other empty.

By means of a small spoon the water in the first bowl must be transferred to the
second, while taking every precaution to spill as little as possible.

These motions must be performed slowly, regularly, and without any sign of
impatience.

Sixth Exercise. After having made an estimate of one's muscular powers, one
must set oneself to accomplish the task of raising a weight greater than one is
able to lift at the moment of commencing this exercise.

One should begin with a weight that one can handle with some ease, and should
practice lifting it for several days, until one is able to do it readily and
without fatigue.

When this result has been achieved a gram should be added to the weight, and
this should be lifted for two days.

Two days afterward a second gram should be added to the original weight.

This should be kept up until the point is reached where the effort involves
fatigue.

At the first indication of difficulty, one should allow the weight to remain at
the point reached and should continue to lift it every day, being very careful
not to change it in the least in anyway.

It must be only at the end of several days, when the effort is quite readily
made, that one should attempt to increase the amount of the weight.

This exercise can be repeated in various ways, to obtain the suppleness or the
power of endurance one desires, whether in the case of walking, of jumping, or
of any other sport.

It is only by measuring out one's physical efforts that one can succeed in
accomplishing that of which one definitely hopes to see the fulfillment.
