"Work that is frittered away gives one no joy and can never bear any fruit.

To be worth anything, the work of to-day must be joined to that of all the days
that have gone before it, which will reinforce it and give it breadth and scope.


The laws of gradually acquired speed are based solely on this one observation.

No machine can be started at full speed.

The series of necessary movements is not produced with the required rapidity and
regularity until the preceding movements can be utilized to accelerate that of
the present moment.

The propelling force acquired is nothing but the result of past impulses joined
to that of the moment, and it will be produced with all its intensity only when
nothing happens to interfere with its regularity and precision.

But let a period of rest intervene and the temporary stoppage will lessen this
force to a considerable extent.

It is from this simile that we must draw a lesson in our study to acquire
perseverance.

To act is a good thing in its way, but to act with judgment is a much better
one, and with- out continuity and regularity no mechanism however perfectly it
may be constructed, will give the satisfaction that one expects from it.

It is this precept that we must follow in order to carry out in every detail the
 exercises of which we have treated in this chapter.
