CHAPTER III
PERSEVERANCE IN OUR DAILY LIFE
The capitalization of energy that is known as perseverance may be put into
application not only in the deciding occurrences of our existence, but also in
the less important circumstances that make up the duties and the pleasures of
our daily life.
Continuity of effort should not be reserved only for great enterprises. To be
fruitful, it should be produced just as much in all the actions of the day.
Perseverance, as related to our daily life, can be divided into two categories
which are quite distinct from each other.
Perseverance that is obligatory and grudgingly accorded.
Perseverance that is deliberate and voluntary.
The former is a state of submission and is accepted with an ill grace.
The latter is a state of choice.
The one marches in the light, crowned with an aureole of the fires of hope.
The other shirks along in the shadow, limping and grumbling as it goes.
Sometimes it takes heart of grace for a little, and resigns itself to its fate;
then starts work in a small way.
It laments no more, but does not indulge in any songs of gladness. It is gray
and neutral. It is routine.
We will speak first of the former type. This sheds over everything the light
that surrounds it.
At the mere touch of it, the most woebegone objects take on the hues of beauty.
It brings joy and happiness to the hearts of those who know it and who practice
its precepts.
It is the song of hope, the song that teaches all those who are heavy-laden the
belief in a fairer to-morrow, as a reward for the labors of to-day.
With its aid all things become clear and simple.
The faith which always journeys with it revives all drooping energies. The
belief in a brighter future, brought into being by its aid, renders less tedious
the efforts which we make to reach it.
Finally, our constant advance along the road on which it guides us, by bringing
the goal nearer and making it more real to us every day, gives us the strength
to renew the efforts which will enable us to reach it.
"But," some one will say, "how can any other sort of perseverance exist?"
Alas! All those who are compelled to earn their living by obscure toil have to
submit to its domination, if only for the moment.
